The CS221 programming assignments are fun! I don’t know if I’ve had this feeling for class coding assignments since CS107…

It’s probably both because they’re in python, and because it’s very laid-out for you so that you don’t have to muck around with boilerplate or stupid code. ahh…CS class is fun again, a little bit. Except unlike CS107, the lectures aren’t that interesting and the psets aren’t really that fun either. Oh well, you can’t win everything.

I should really try to keep Quasarian going…=/

Today was…..interesting. Not really a good day actually. I was too quiet. I might just need some more TLC soon. I didn’t do much…not much at all. I guess it’s only 9:40 so I’ve still got some time, though I have to wake for wushu tomorrow morning (bleh, mendokusai), so not -too- much time. I did get a little bit of CS221 done (due thursday), which is actually the only thing at all that I have due this next week that I haven’t done yet. And I did a reading and watched a lecture.

What else happened today? I…

Got a new TA Death record (by one level), haha, so that was nice. I’m sitting in anime club right now just chilling.

Okay, maybe I know what’s throwing me all out of whack. Now to figure out what to do about it. First, plan on confronting it. Second, until then, reminding myself that I am strong, empowered, xD…

Gotta get back on my feet…gotta be strong! somehow…somehow………..

Today was a good day. Actually, today was quite a great day. A lot of things went well. Actually, a LOT of things went well. Allergies were better than yesterday, Japanese office hours fun, OHC, having fun with Secret Grade in TGM, chatting with friends, finishing CS243 with David an entire week early (not to mention already having finished Japanese more than a week in advance)…and even some other things that I can’t even really mention.

Yeah, awesomeness all around, pretty much.

JHCompo – MagFest Edition

(note: this was actually last Thursday but I forgot to post it)

No OHC this week because of MAGFest, so JH hosted a “JHCompo” instead and we got 2 hours instead of 1. Initially I was just planning on using 1 hour, but things got rolling and I just ended up making this monster 6-minute song. O_O

Starts off with a soundscape patch straight out of Alchemy–yep, that chord is actually part of the patch. Kind of cheating, I know xD. Then we get some more layers of sounds–things are very sparse and space-y now.

And then…the beat! Good stuff as always. And then we add in some more layers, before going into a long breakdown. First we get pads that sweep in from below, and then add low strings for epicness, then add a subtle whistle lead on top.

And after that comes…the epic build. Predictable as always, I know. xD The epic basslead/phatness is straight from Sylenth1–there’s pretty much these 2 Sylenth1 patches that are great for these sounds. After a glitch, we go into our nice UNTS for a while (there’s a reverse cymbal here which is 4 measures too late =/), then we get a TS404 nes-style lead that you’ve heard from me many times before by now. Then onto the outro…

A very standard piece by me, but longer since it’s 6 minutes and I had 2 hours for it. Good stuff, but next time I’ll try something different…


You have been chosen for an important expedition, far away. You are excited to go, until you realize that once you leave, you will not be able to come home ever. Tonights theme is “You cannot return.”

My entry:

Fun theme tonight, I guess. I thought it worked very well with the kind of “standard” things I do. My entry…well, I have very very mixed feelings about it. It’s both good and bad, and good and bad all at the same time.

We start off with a random airy pad sequence with a patch from Alchemy, and then quite quickly (I used shorter phrases this time around, hence why the song is shorter), we get a nice beat and a generic bassline. I’m actually quite happy with the drums here–I again used my good old “standard” approach to drums and it worked very well. I put just a tad of distortion and sample reduction here too to give it a bit of grit.

After some more mostly-uninteresting layering, we get this background drone in…yeah, C. I need to start using other keys 9_9. I’m just so lazy sometimes…

Anyways, then we get that oh-so-familiar-by-now TS404 nes-style lead. Only this time I’ve got 2 of them to give some harmony. We get some more pads and my by-now-overused kick sample and things build up until we get a breakdown with low strings backing, and here we introduce the chord progression. The melody here is both good and bad at the same time–it’s got a nice character, but somehow isn’t as good as it could be.

Then in from below comes…a massive lead just like always, and then we drop the beat. Haha, so so so predictable, but still alright, though the buildup is honestly not nearly as big as some of my other ones. After repeating the lead melody, we go back into the funk drums for the outro.

There’s some good stuff going on here, but also some bad stuff (the lead is mixed too loud, some parts are rather uninspired, etc). So it’s a very mixed bag. It’s also way too much like everything else I’ve done. Next week I need to push it and do something weird again. Probably something dark and brooding, with a nice beat–haven’t done something like that in awhile. And also, something that DOESN’T transition into unts. xD
